Some frequently asked questions:
Why do we only recycle plastic bottles?
Currently, the only types of plastic we can find a suitable market for are plastic bottles. Until we are able to find a market for other plastics we will not be able to accept items such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and meat/fruit trays.
What’s the deal with Garden Waste?
Our current system for collecting bags of garden waste and sending all of that material to landfill has become unsustainable. New European legislation requires us to compost all of the material we can. There is a trial only in Hethersett for six months at the moment using Brown Bins.
What can I do with my Garden Waste?
You can still purchase a reduced price composter, Council garden waste labels or take your garden clippings to the local tip (01603222917).
Will glass eventually go in the green bin?
Eventually we hope that it will. We have to wait for technology to catch up with us. We hope to gradually increase the types of materials we can recycle in the green bin as time goes on.
Can I put extra waste next to my bins?
This should not be necessary, but if you have the standard size bins waste is accepted in a black bag next to the grey bin, and recyclables in a box next to the green bin. If you want to swap to a larger size bin phone 01508533916—the council will swap only once free of charge.
HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING CENTRES (COSTESSEY).
HWRCs will accept no more than one 80 litre sack or item of DIY waste each week from your home or garden and your District Council will not collect this type of waste.
This means if you have a large amount of DIY waste you will need to return to a HWRC each week with small amounts of make alternative disposal arrangements such as hiring a skip or using one of the waste bag services available at DIY stores. Alternatively:
Take your DIY waste to one of the participating disposal points (COSTESSEY LONGWATER BUSINESS PARK IS NEAREST FOR US open Monday-Friday 8 am-4 pm; Saturday 8 am—12 pm). There is no an extra service at the main centres for people wanting to dispose of more than the one sack in one go.
Pay a fee.
Leave your waste where the site operator tells you to.
Note that the number of vehicles allowed on site at any one time will be limited for health and safety reasons—this may result in waiting time on site.
What is waste from DIY?
Brick, Rubble, Concrete, fitted kitchens and wardrobes, bathroom suites, central heating system components, garden sheds and fencing, garden soil and turf (grass cuttings and prunings will be accepted at HWRCs), pond and other excavations, doors, windows, roofing materials, plasterboard, structural wood, other building materials.
